The Miracle of the Poinsettia

Red star-shaped flowers decorate streets and houses at Christmas time. Pointsettia is its name, and Mexico is where this tradition comes from. Let's learn about its origin. It's the miracle of the first poinsettia.
And what about the Christmas tree? This is how it became a Christmas symbol back in the 16th century! Listen

Powerful singing

Back in the 70's, forty years ago, Gloria Gaynor used her powerful voice to sing an inspiring message of strength and freedom: I Will Survive.

Written in the first person, the lyrics describe her (or any other person's) building up personal strength after an initially devastating breakup. It was a hit in 1979, reaching number one on radio song charts several weeks in a row. So many women danced to the song independently of men in discos; a song which they probably heard as a model of independence.

I will survive is still popular and sometimes sung as the expression of women's liberation. Read the lyrics of the song and give it a thought. Could you say some relevant line to yourself?

Aiming High

Nelson Mandela said:

"It is not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success."

However, Oscar Wilde thought differently:

"Success is a science; if you have the conditions, you get the result."

Whose opinion do you agree with?

A poem a day

Lewis Carroll is famous for his Alice in Wonderland, but he is also known for his comic fantasies and humorous verse. Here an example:

The Crocodile by Lewis Carroll

How doth the little crocodile
     Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
     On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
     How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
     With gently smiling jaws!

*Note: doth = does
