The
most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set --
Or better still, just don't install
The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we've been,
We've watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.
(Last week in someone's place we saw
A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotised by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink --
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
IT ROTS THE SENSE IN THE HEAD!
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND
A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!
HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESE!
HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE!
HE CANNOT THINK -- HE ONLY SEES!
'All right!' you'll cry. 'All right!' you'll say,
'But if we take the set away,
What shall we do to entertain
Our darling children? Please explain!'
We'll answer this by asking you,
'What used the darling ones to do?
'How used they keep themselves contented
Before this monster was invented?'
Have you forgotten? Don't you know?
We'll say it very loud and slow:
THEY ... USED ... TO ... READ! They'd READ and READ,
AND READ and READ, and then proceed
To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks!
One half their lives was reading books!
The nursery shelves held books galore!
Books cluttered up the nursery floor!
And in the bedroom, by the bed,
More books were waiting to be read!
Such wondrous, fine, fantastic tales
Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching 'round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.
(It smells so good, what can it be?
Good gracious, it's Penelope.)
The younger ones had Beatrix Potter
With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and-
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How the Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There's Mr. Rate and Mr. Mole-
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks-
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something to read.
And once they start -- oh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hearts. They'll grow so keen
They'll wonder what they'd ever seen
In that ridiculous machine,
That nauseating, foul, unclean,
Repulsive television screen!
And later, each and every kid
Will love you more for what you did.

In my case, I agree with the idea that TV kills your imagination up to a certain extent because it depends on what you watch and also how long you watch it. There are many things on TV that may feed yout imagination, for example, there are films which might make you imagine how you will react to a disaster and you can also watch some series that are useful to develop your imagination such as adventure's or science fiction's. Moving on to how long you watch TV, you ought to control it in order not to spend so much time watching it so you can read, study and develop your brain and your imagination by using different devices. The key is basically to know when and how you should use the TV as well as what you should watch on it.
ReplyDeleteAs we have said in class, television is a great way to get new knowledges, to know things that happens in the other side of the world, but can television kill our imagination?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion no, television can give us another point of view. Of course we can not compare televisions with books but both of them can develop our imagination.
Books are also great, while your are reading for example Harry Potter, you can also imagine how the characters can be in real life, or maybe landscapes. But what we dont know is that books can be as good as televisions.
An argument can be that television stimulates children brain and make them more creatives.
Alexandra García Rengifo 1ª bach
i don´t agree with the poem when it sais that TV kills your imagination, i think that it doesn´t improve your imagination but it doesn´t make it worse, if you are a creative person you are going to be acreative person during your entire life.I think television is necessary to know what happens in the world every day and some news that you should know as a citizen. I agree with the text in one thing and it is that some childrens stay staring tv programmes or cartoons during hours and it could make this kids a little bit less sociable in his daily life because they aren´t accustomed to hang out with their friends because they prefer stay at home watching TV.
ReplyDeleteI reckon that books are really good to improve your imagination and helps you to develope some habilities that TV can´t give to you. Anyway i don´t think TV is the best way to develope and to improve the mental agility but it isn´t the worse for me, i need a TV set in my home but when i am a father i won´t allow my sons watch TV during long periods of time and i´ll try that they read as much as possible to train their brains.
In my opinion, no one needs the TV to live their lifes, but the TV can be a good entertainment when you are boring or when you need to relax. It's true that there are programmes on tv that aren´t good for you because their purpose is change your opinion or simply they aren't useful for you, but there are others programmes that report you about important things or make you laugh and spend a good time with your family or friends. I reckon you can watch the TV and be a learned man, but you can't be a person who depends on TV because if you are, TV can manipulate you.

I agree with the poem one hundred percent because I believe reading is a marvelous habit that we are losing, and people who read become much more cultivated. Nowadays people are getting less and less interested in learning and making their minds grow up, and that fact upsets me, people
ReplyDeletedon´t now what they are losing.

In my opinion I disagree with the writer because television is really important. You know what has happened every day.
ReplyDeleteAlthogh I feel Roald Dahl has an extremely idea about Tv,because it is not a disaster that a boy is watching the Tv for two hours. However the autor is right when he said that Tv kills the imagination, the senses and it makes a child so dull. But only if the boy stays in front of Tv for many hours. In addition the world is changing constantly with new gadgets so you cannot come back to the past, the only option is to make a good use of that new gadgets. The best thing you can do in my opinion is to make a balanced use of books and Tv.

Personally I feel that he's not quite right in terms of television, but he has a point in regards of reading.
ReplyDeleteReading is really important to let children's imagination run free and it's also really fun. However, it doesn't means that watching TV can't be enjoyable and educational too. Kids can watch many interactive programs which help them to improve their English, or that teach them how to be more artistic while they're having fun, for example.
So in conclusion, there's no need to throw away the television, as the writer says, when children can both read and watch TV.
The author tries to give us a perspective of the impact that has had television in the children’s lives. The arguments he gives are almost solid. I also share his point of view, which supports reading habits.
ReplyDeleteI consider that the learning process can be enriched with reading and watching television.
- Reading is basic in this process, as it gives the student the vocabulary and fluency needed. Reading levels should be adapted depending on what each child knows. This must show children that learning can be also a process to enjoy.
- Watching television is not as bad as Roald Dahl says. If parents select suitable programs for their children, their minds will be constantly thinking and learning.
The difference between reading and watching is that reading gives the reader the option to develop his imagination. This does not occurred with TV that gives the image directly. Spending more time reading is what experts suggest; it does not mean not to watch TV.
I don't agree with the writer because television doesn't have to be bad for people if they do not abuse it too much. Moderate use may even be advisable for people with problems and illnesses to help them solve their disabilities.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, if I agree that it is much better to read a book than to watch television, because I think it is more interesting because of the variety of stories and novels that we can find. Also reading can overcome many difficulties when writing and is not as harmful to health as television.
Cristina González 1°B
I agree with Roal Dahl, I think that TV makes people stupid. The content is so bad and don't teach you anything. I don't read books but I think that reading books is better than watch TV.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with Roald Dahl's opinion about television. I have to admit that it is a very good way of controlling what your kids are doing while you do some housework, but it will surely have negative effects in the long run. Although current society don't seem to be concious about it, children are increasingly addicted to that "fantastic" screen which containts every kind of stuff which you CANNOT control. However, TV is not the inviention that I'm most worried about, because it will probably be replaced by phones or tablets, which are portable, while the television is not and will never be. To sum up, this invention has negatively modified the way children have fun, but it is not the invention we should focus the most on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author because I think that we spend a lot of time watching absurd programs on television. However, I think reading books help us to understand better the texts and improves our culture.
ReplyDeleteBut, on the other hand, television has educatives channels. Cartoons channels teach to count, even to speak English. Also the news inform us about what is happening around the world.
Antonio Pérez, 1ºB Bachillerato.
I think that it is better to read books tan watching TV, because the TV manipulates us with advertisement and waste of time day to day, time that can be spent on other things.
ReplyDeleteThe books are a good form to develop imagination and reading comprehension for the future as well as critical thinking.
Alejandro González 1ºB
From my point of view, I agree and disagree with Roal Dahl. Agree because its known that television make kids adopts a sedentary life and maybe gets worse the imagination, but it isnt true if people watch them moderatelly. It isnt bad if you controlled the time that a children can watch them, and like the books, it has a lot of histories that dont depend on your imagination.
ReplyDeleteI dont see the Tv or read books, but I think that the two can be beneficial (under a control)
Álvaro Gamero 1ºB
To be honest, I do not totally agree with the idea that the author conveys although I see his point and I understand it was written a few years ago and at that time it obviously had such bad opinions coming up from those who didn´t know much more than what it looked like at first, when it was an unusual item.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I do not think that television is totally harmful but it is quite necessary to know how to use it in a proper way, I mean watching the right programs and not too much time.
On the other hand I support the idea that reading will make good in children as it is a really important part of their learning process.
To sum up, I will say if you follow these tips you could take full advantage of the benefits television has.
I agree with the author in some points of view.
ReplyDeleteI think the television per se is not bad ,the bad things are that children nowaday spend a lot of time watching TV and this action make people think television is a junk. If children nowaday do not abuse watching TV it is possible the writer have different perspective of TV.
In my opinion books are good for children because reading books can learn new thigs we do not know and it make us use more our imagination, something not all use.
Read books are not only good for children also for adults , although not everyone likes read books like me .
I prefer watching television because I find watching TV more interesting than reading books but is not bad idea read books occasionally.
I think you dont have to throw the television, if children can control their time watching tv.
I agree with the writer in some things but not all of them. On the one hand, in my opinion stay all day sitting down in front of a screen is bad for all kind of people, but especially for children. Watch TV does not helps the kids to think by themselves. It does not force childrens to think. As the poem says:HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE! HE CANNOT THINK -- HE ONLY SEES!. On the other hand, TV is has been the most important comunication media. While we are watching TV we can learn a lot, and some programs, as the news, show us what it happening in the world. I think we should have a balance between TV and books. Read is very good for us, it increase our culture, vocabulay and knowledge, but we have not got to keep us away from TV. Both can be compatible.
ReplyDeleteEducating the children with television is to take off their capacity of imagination because the television shows a direct image of what you see, however to educate the children reading books helps the imagination and the capacity of thinking when they grow older,it makes them more free.
ReplyDeleteBy;María Borjabad
Although I don't completely agree with the author's opinion, I have to say that I find more satisfactory reading books than watching TV.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, TV can be a good way of learning if you know how to use it. There are lots of programs that may widen your knowledge like documentaries. However, TV cannot improve your imagination and there are also junk programs (the majority nowadays). After all TV is actually a entertaiment media not a learning one.
On the order hand, reading is a unique way of learning at the same time you are enjoying it. Starting a book means starting a new and an irreplaceable experience.
Daniel Pérez Nogues, 1ºBachillerato A
I agree with the writer that children because it kills imagination. Tv doesn't let you think or imagine the things that we don't see. In my opinion tv manipulates people's opinion. Tlowerer, i think that reeding isn't the only solution to this problem you have to think by yourself
ReplyDeleteI reckon that the poem isn't completely right because in my opinion throwing out the TV set isn’t a solution: it’s a media which everybody uses to know events that happen around the world. Anyway you will be an ignorant if you don't watch news on the TV because you will not have an open mind.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I think that there should be more readers like the poem says: reading is a mental exercise that makes you improve your imagination and learn new vocabulary. We can see in high schools that students aren’t very good at speaking. This is due to the fact that most students don’t usually read.
It's true that there are many TV programmes which aren't trash TV, but art. Despite of this, everything can be harmful if we overuse it.
I agree with the writer. I think that people has changed books for TV. Nowadays TV is more important than books, and in my opinion it should be the other way round. Children spend more time with the "ghastly junk" than with books. Children can´t learn to imagine watching too much TV. However with books they can, and they make him think. The time that children spend watching TV should be spent by themselves. Their family, for example, when parents read their children tales before sleeping... We shouldn´t lose that habit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Roal Dahl, because nowaday, the spend more time watching tv than reading books.
ReplyDeleteI think books allow children to develop his imagination and they learn more
